DESKTOP RAINMAKER FAQ

A little clarity.

The useful things to know,
before and after your first session.

Is this a traditional screen saver?

Desktop Rainmaker runs as an interactive overlay over your working desktop. Your apps remain visible, and clicks pass through the visual layer. A traditional macOS screen saver hides the desktop after inactivity. Desktop Rainmaker does not replace your Mac’s lock-screen security settings.

Can I keep using my apps while effects are running?

Yes. You can click and work through the effect layer. The control panel remains interactive. For easier reading, lower the effect density or switch Visuals off.

Can I keep one part of the screen clear?

Yes. Clear zone lets you draw one rectangle or circle on a display. Rain and Confetti respond around its edges, keeping the inside clear. Move or resize it in the editor, use its switch to turn it off and on, or remove it. The outline is visible only while editing. These controls do not restart your timer.

Can Keep Awake work without rain or confetti?

Yes. Turn Visuals off and Keep Awake on, choose your duration and press Start. You can change either switch during a session without restarting its timer.

What does Keep Awake prevent?

While active, Keep Awake asks macOS to prevent automatic idle display and system sleep. It does not change your saved power settings. Manual sleep, closing a laptop lid and macOS power or thermal policy can still put your Mac to sleep. Pause, Stop, the end of a timed session and Quit release the Keep Awake request.

Why does my Mac stop staying awake when I press Pause?

Pause pauses the whole session: visuals disappear, the countdown pauses and Keep Awake is released. To hide effects while keeping the Mac awake, switch Visuals off instead.

Can I change the duration while a session is running?

The active session keeps the duration it started with. To choose a new duration, press Stop, change the minutes or Infinity selection, then press Start. You can change the scene, weather, intensity and activity switches without restarting the current timer.

Why does live glass refraction need Screen Recording permission?

To bend the actual desktop behind the drops, the app needs to process display frames. This is optional and off by default on a fresh installation. Frames are processed in memory on your Mac, not saved or uploaded, and audio is not captured. Rain works without this permission.

What if Screen Recording is enabled but refraction still cannot start?

Check that macOS has permission for the exact installed app, then quit and reopen it if macOS requests that. Leave refraction off to keep using rain, confetti and Keep Awake. If it still fails, email support@number817.com with your macOS version and the message shown in the panel.

How do I stop live desktop capture?

Turn Live glass refraction off. Pausing, stopping, switching Visuals off, selecting Confetti or quitting also stops capture. You can revoke permission in macOS Privacy & Security settings.

What should I do if the effects slow down?

Start by lowering Density, Size or Motion Speed. Very high settings require more graphics work, particularly across several displays. The app adapts rendering work to available capacity, and Low Power Mode or a warm Mac can reduce the update rate. Use Visuals off when you only need Keep Awake.

Will it use more battery?

Animated effects use graphics power, and Keep Awake keeps the display active when it might otherwise sleep. Choose a finite duration, lighter effects, or Keep Awake without visuals when that suits your task. Turn Keep Awake off when you no longer need it.

Does it prevent burn-in or protect my display?

No display-protection claim is made. Desktop Rainmaker is a visual-effects and Keep Awake app. It leaves your underlying content visible and can keep the display active. Follow your display manufacturer’s care guidance and allow the display to sleep when you do not need it.

Will it improve focus or reduce fatigue?

The app lets you choose an atmosphere you enjoy, from gentle rain to lively confetti. We do not claim that it improves concentration, reduces fatigue or prevents burnout. Adjust the motion to your preference and turn it off whenever you want a clear desktop.

Which Macs is it being built for?

The current build targets Apple silicon Macs running macOS Sonoma 14 or later. Intel Macs, iPhone and iPad are not supported by this build. Compatibility testing continues before public release.

Where can I download Desktop Rainmaker?

Desktop Rainmaker is in development and is not yet available as a public App Store download. Release details will be shared here when they are confirmed.

Do I need an account?

The current app does not require an account. Its preferences are stored locally. It includes no advertising, third-party analytics or cloud sync.

How do I adjust a Clear zone from the compact panel?

Open the Rain or Confetti style menu, then open Clear zone. Choose Move or Resize to edit the saved area, turn it on or off, draw a rectangle or circle, or remove it. In the editor, use the handles to resize and drag the area to move it. Arrow keys nudge a selected zone; hold Shift for a larger step. Done saves. Cancel or Escape keeps your previous zone.

Will my Clear zone follow an app window or work on every display?

A Clear zone belongs to a position on one display; it does not follow an app window. You can move it to another connected display in the editor. Its placement is saved locally, and circles remain circular when the display resolution changes. If its display is disconnected, the saved zone waits for that display to return. Drawing a new zone replaces the previous one.

Does drawing a Clear zone need Screen Recording or Accessibility permission?

No. The editor uses ordinary app windows to let you draw a rectangle or circle. Its input overlay closes when you choose Done or Cancel, and your apps remain clickable beneath the effect layer. Screen Recording is only needed if you separately enable live glass refraction.
